This photo shows a street outside South Kensington station in London with
electric scooters. You can hire these e-scooters by downloading an app and
scanning a QR code, paying for the amount of time you ride the scooter for.
With this alternative method of transport, road congestion in London is
reduced, lowering annual pollution rates. The individual decision to hire an
e-scooter creates a positive externality to a third party, as the air is cleaner for
the public due to fewer exhaust fumes being released from cars. E-scooters
may also be a more affordable method of transport for some people, compared
to a taxi, whilst being able to get around the city quicker than by foot. Cutting
down travelling time can allow someone’s work day to become more efficient.
This is an example of an installation of more environmentally friendly
technology creating a positive externality
